For thousands of years we have enjoyed the health benefits of saunas, from the traditional Finnish sauna (hot rocks) to the Turkish bathhouse (steam room).

In recent years we have seen the introduction of new sauna technology known as ‘Infrared’. Unlike the traditional saunas which work by heating the room, infrared sauna do not require heat to be effective. Instead of hot rocks and steam, Infrared lamps are used which penetrate tissue and raise the core body temperature. The infrared lamps generate unique light waves that increase heart rate, boost circulation and result in a purifying sweat.

The optimum temperature range for an infrared sauna is between 38°C and 58°C for maximum benefit. This is significantly lower than the traditional saunas which are heated between 65°C and 90°C and for this reason they are more popular and easier to endure.

Other benefits of infrared sauna include:

  • Reduce pain
  • Support immune system
  • Promote detoxification
  • Reduce stress
  • Support blood pressure
  • Increase circulation
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Support wound healing

Billabong Retreat is home to an infrared sauna which emits light waves known as near, mid and far infrared. All three lights are important and offer unique health benefits.

  • Near Infrared: is the shortest infrared wavelength. It promotes skin renewal, cell health, wound healing, and tissue growth.
  • Mid Infrared: is a longer wavelength that can penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissue.  It can benefit circulation, reduce inflammation, and support pain relief.
  • Far Infrared: The longest wavelength, far infrared (FIR), reaches deepest into the body, where toxins are stored. It supports healthy blood pressure and detoxification.
