Protein: A Foundation for Wellbeing

By Our Resident Naturopath: Anne Currenti

In the world of wellness, we often focus on what to eat less of.

Less sugar. Less processed food. Less snacking.

But sometimes the most supportive question we can ask is:

What do I need more of?

For many people, the answer may be protein.

Protein is one of the essential building blocks of the body. It supports muscle maintenance, recovery, immune function, healthy ageing and sustained energy throughout the day.

It can also help us feel more satisfied after meals, reducing the rollercoaster of energy crashes and constant cravings for quick fixes.

Rather than focusing on numbers or strict rules, it can be helpful to simply bring awareness to including a source of protein with each meal.

This might be eggs and natural or greek yoghurt at breakfast, legumes in a salad or tofu in a stir-fry.

Like all aspects of wellbeing, nourishment isn’t about perfection.

It’s about learning to listen to your body and responding with care.

When we consistently provide our bodies with the nutrients they need, we often notice the benefits reaching far beyond physical health.

More sustained energy.

Better recovery.

Greater resilience.

A steadier foundation from which to move, rest and live well.

Small changes are often the most sustainable. Here are a few easy ways to increase your protein intake at home:

  • Include a palm-sized serve of protein with your lunch and dinner.
  • Add eggs as an omelette at breakfast.
  • Consider a handful of nuts and seeds as a snack.
  • Choose natural or greek yoghurt instead of regular yoghurt.
  • Add chickpeas, lentils or beans to soups, salads and curries.
  • Keep simple protein-rich options on hand, such as boiled eggs, hummus, tofu or tempeh.

Most importantly, focus on building balanced meals that leave you feeling nourished, satisfied and energised.

This month, we invite you to pause before each meal and ask yourself:

“How can I nourish myself well today?”

Sometimes the smallest shifts in awareness create the most meaningful changes in how we feel.
