Rachel – A Bright Energy Woven Into Billabong

If you’ve spent time at Billabong Retreat, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Rachel from our Housekeeping team.

With her bright energy, warm smile and genuine care for both guests and the space itself, she brings something very special to the retreat experience. We sat down with Rachel to learn a little more about what inspires her, what keeps her grounded and what she loves most about life at Billabong.

You always bring such a bright energy to Billabong. Have you always been someone who’s on the go and full of energy?

Absolutely. Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved running around, creating, making things and getting excited about life and happiness. It’s interesting because, growing up, having a lot of energy was sometimes mistaken for something negative. But I think having an exuberant spirit is actually a beautiful gift, especially when it’s channelled into a positive direction.

What do you love most about working at Billabong Retreat?

Without a doubt, the people I work with. I also love that my “office” is the bush. But most of all, I genuinely love making someone’s day.

What does a typical day at Billabong look like for you?

There’s really no such thing as a typical day at Billabong. One moment I’m making beds and preparing rooms, the next I’m lighting fires, helping guests with their luggage in the buggy or setting up for yoga classes and wellness events. Every day is different, which keeps things interesting.

Guests often comment on how warm and welcoming the space feels. What do you think makes a place feel genuinely cared for?

Attention to detail, always. Whether it’s being thoughtful about someone’s needs, going out of your way to exceed expectations or simply offering a big smile, it’s the little things that make people feel cared for. The magic is always in the details.

You always seem very real and honest in the way you move through life. Do you think that openness helps you live more lightly?

Definitely. I believe integrity is everything. Being honest and real with yourself first is the key. Sometimes that can be difficult work, but once you become friends with yourself, life feels a lot lighter and much more fluid.

What helps you recharge when life gets busy?

Beach, bush and creek… all at once if possible! Haha.

What’s something simple that’s been bringing you joy lately?

Watching the leaves change from green into vibrant reds and yellows.

If you could describe Billabong Retreat in three words, what would they be?

Natural. Beautiful. Inspiring.

Favourite spot on the property?

There are so many beautiful places, but my favourite would have to be The Pavilion. It sits right on the billabong and feels incredibly peaceful. I love that it can transform into a semi-outdoor space just by opening all the glass doors. It almost feels like you’re floating on the water. It’s very special.
