The science of Breathwork- The power within you.

Michelle Dyball guides transformative Breathwork experiences at Billabong retreat. It is more than just breathing it is a reset for the nervous system, a way to access stored emotion, and a pathway back to the body. Through breath, we can begin to feel what has been buried, release what has been held, and reconnect to a deeper sense of self.

Michelle shares her story:

My work is born from lived experience. I don’t heal people — I show them how to heal themselves. Most people don’t realise how much their body is holding onto… or how to truly see it, feel it, and shift it. That’s where my work begins.

My journey into this work didn’t start in a classroom it started in my own life. I grew up in an environment where I never felt safe. Childhood trauma, including ongoing sexual abuse, learning difficulties, and a deep sense of being unseen and unsupported, shaped my early years. I struggled at school, felt disconnected from others, and carried a constant sense of not being enough. Home life was unstable, and I learned very early what it meant to live in survival. As I moved into adulthood, that pain followed me. I found myself in cycles of addiction and unhealthy relationships, still searching for something I couldn’t yet name — safety, connection, and a sense of self.

Over 20 years ago, I took my first real step toward healing. I was around 30, running a small healing business, when I came across a course on inner child healing. Something in me knew — this is it. This is what’s been missing. From that moment, everything began to shift. I became deeply committed to understanding trauma, the human body, and the emotional patterns we carry. I invested everything I had into learning not just intellectually, but through lived experience. Every modality I explored brought deeper awareness, greater understanding, and more connection back to myself. Breathwork became one of the most powerful tools in my journey.

It is more than just breathing it is a reset for the nervous system, a way to access stored emotion, and a pathway back to the body. Through breath, we can begin to feel what has been buried, release what has been held, and reconnect to a deeper sense of self. After becoming a mother to my two beautiful children, something shifted even more deeply. I made a decision to break cycles, to heal fully, and to become someone who could guide others through what I had lived.

Today, I create safe, grounded spaces for people to turn inward. To meet themselves honestly. To feel, release, and reconnect. My work supports people to move out of survival and into self-awareness, self-trust, and inner strength. Because I know what it feels like to survive your hardest days and I also know that they don’t have to define the rest of your life There is always a way back to yourself.

Try these breathing techniques:

1. A simple 4-second inhale through the nose and 6-second exhale through the mouth helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, signalling safety to the body and allowing it to soften out of stress or freeze.

2. A more activating technique such as a 2-second mouth inhale & 1-second mouth exhale breath, is a faster rhythmic breath that can help move stagnant energy, bringing awareness to suppressed emotions creating space for release.

Using different types of Breathwork techniques allows change in the body’s chemistry, helping people reconnect with their body, regulate their system, and begin to feel what has long been held beneath the surface, in a way that is both safe and empowering. Michelle guides her transformative
