Five Nights of Connection: Insights from Our New Year’s Retreat

Reflections from Mark Seeto and Stella, Co-Hosts of the Retreat

As cliche as it may sound, the most important teaching we’re carrying forward from our New Year’s retreat is the power of genuine connection.

As we step into 2026, this retreat reminded us that authentic human connection is one of our greatest gifts — and one of our most important practices. Creating space to be present, to serve, and to connect with others is what makes moments like these unforgettable.

Equally profound was the connection that unfolded over five nights with our guests. Time is everything. Sharing meals, practice, and space across multiple days created an environment where walls softened and guarded edges fell away. What emerged was authenticity — not just between hosts and guests, but between guests themselves.

The retreat became a container of shared humanity — something we rarely experience in everyday life. When people feel safe, seen, and supported over time, connection deepens, and from that depth come moments that are genuinely life-changing.

Mark: For me, co-hosting alongside Stella for the very first time was a profound experience. From the moment we met, there was an immediate sense of ease, alignment, and trust. Stepping into shared leadership with someone new can feel vulnerable, yet Stella and I found a rhythm and understanding that allowed us both to show up fully. That kind of connection is rare, and it felt like a real blessing to begin the year grounded in mutual respect and openness.

Stella: “There was an immediate sense of ease, alignment, and trust. I’m deeply grateful to Billabong Retreat for the opportunity to co-host with someone I didn’t know, and for trusting that something beautiful could emerge.Mark, thank you for your presence, your integrity, and the way you showed up so fully. And to every guest who joined us, thank you for your openness, your courage, and your willingness to step into the New Year with intention. Being in service is where my heart feels most alive. To welcome the New Year while serving others felt deeply right to me.” — Stella
